Cancer Treatment in India for Nigerian Patients: Costs, Hospitals and Planning Guide

A cancer diagnosis can leave a family feeling shocked, afraid and financially pressured all at once. For many Nigerian patients, the worry is not only about treatment — it is also about where to get reliable care, how much it will cost, and whether the journey abroad will be safe and well-organised.

India has become a common choice for international cancer patients because many hospitals offer multidisciplinary cancer care, international patient desks, medical visa support and treatment costs that may be lower than many private healthcare options abroad. Apollo Cancer Centres, for example, mention customised packages and accommodation support for international patients near their cancer centres

Cancer Treatment Options Available in India

Cancer treatment is not one single procedure. The correct plan depends on the cancer type, stage, previous treatment, general health and biopsy/imaging reports.

1. Cancer Surgery

Surgery may be advised when the cancer is localised and can be removed. Common examples include breast cancer surgery, colon cancer surgery, kidney tumour surgery, prostate surgery, gynaecological cancer surgery and head-and-neck cancer surgery.

In larger Indian hospitals, surgery may be done through open, laparoscopic or robotic methods depending on the case. Robotic surgery can cost more, but may offer smaller cuts and faster recovery in selected patients.

2. Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy uses medicines to destroy or control cancer cells. It may be given before surgery, after surgery, or as the main treatment. The cost depends heavily on the drugs used. Basic chemotherapy can be relatively affordable, while imported or newer medicines can be expensive.

3. Radiation Therapy

Radiation uses targeted beams to kill cancer cells. It is commonly used for breast, prostate, cervical, head-and-neck, brain and many other cancers. Advanced techniques like IMRT, IGRT, SBRT or proton therapy may cost more than standard radiation.

4. Targeted Therapy and Immunotherapy

These are newer treatments used in selected cancers based on tumour markers, genetic tests or cancer type. They can be very effective for some patients, but costs vary widely. This is one area where Nigerian patients should request a clear monthly estimate before travelling.

5. Bone Marrow / Stem Cell Transplant

This may be needed in some blood cancers such as leukaemia, lymphoma or multiple myeloma. It is a complex treatment and requires a longer stay in India. Tata Memorial Centre’s international patient information notes refundable deposits for registration and admission, showing how structured financial planning is required for foreign patients.

Estimated Cancer Treatment Costs in India

These are broad private-hospital ranges for international patients. Final pricing can change based on cancer stage, hospital, doctor, room category, medicines and complications.

TreatmentEstimated Cost in India

Recent Indian medical-travel cost guides place chemotherapy commonly in the hundreds to low thousands of dollars per cycle, while full radiation and major cancer surgeries can run into several thousand dollars

Costs Nigerian Patients Should Not Forget

The hospital bill is only one part of the total budget. Nigerian families should also plan for:

  • Flights from Lagos or Abuja to Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru or Hyderabad
  • Medical visa and attendant visa costs
  • Hotel or serviced apartment stay
  • Food, local transport and SIM card
  • Extra days if more tests are needed
  • Blood tests before each chemotherapy cycle
  • Medicines after discharge
  • Follow-up scans
  • Emergency reserve of at least 15–20%

For chemotherapy, patients may need to stay several weeks or travel in cycles. For surgery, a stay of 2–4 weeks may be enough in many cases. For bone marrow transplant, the stay can be much longer.

Practical Travel Tips for Nigerian Patients

Before travelling, send your biopsy report, PET-CT/CT/MRI scans, blood tests and previous treatment details to at least two hospitals for opinion. Ask for a written estimate, expected stay, treatment sequence and what is not included.

Apply for a medical visa, not a tourist visa, when treatment is planned. Tata Medical Center Kolkata states that foreign nationals are registered only on possession of a medical visa, and other visa categories are not acceptable for treatment registration.

Choose accommodation close to the hospital, especially if chemotherapy or radiation is planned. Daily travel in Indian cities can be tiring for weak patients. Also, carry enough funds for the first phase of treatment, but avoid carrying large cash amounts unnecessarily; ask the hospital about card, wire transfer or forex options.

Final Advice

India can be a strong option for Nigerian cancer patients, but the best results come from planning carefully. Do not choose only by the lowest price. Choose based on the cancer specialty, hospital credibility, doctor experience, treatment clarity and support after arrival.

The most important step is to get a proper treatment plan before you fly. Once the diagnosis, stage and treatment sequence are clear, your family can budget realistically and travel with more confidence.
